What is the Smithton Town Centre Plan project?
The Smithton Town Centre Plan will guide the growth and development of the town centre. The project is our opportunity to collaboratively revitalise the town centre, enhance our community’s quality of life and attract visitors and businesses.
Why do we need a Town Centre Plan?
With little change to the planning of Smithton over the past 50 years, this project is an opportunity for us to collaborate with you to identify issues and draw up a collective blueprint for future growth. Positive and well thought out development of the Smithton town precincts, key strategic sites and much loved heritage places will ensure we have attractive and vibrant areas to live, work and enjoy for our future generations.
What are the aims of the project?
The aims of the project are to:
- Enhance the local character and identity of Smithton.
- Support growth and change.
- Encourage the development of vacant or undeveloped land.
- Strengthen connections between the different parts of town.
- Enable better access to health and well-being services and education.
- Create a stronger destination that draws and holds people.
- Improve the social role of streets by creating more pedestrian friendly feel.
- Promote a sustainable and climate friendly town.
- Create conditions for the development of new services to support emerging industries such as tourism and renewable energy.
What’s next?
The Final Smithton Town Centre Plan was adopted as a reference document in November 2025.
This means that the Plan will help to guide future decisions and actions to improve and revitalise Smithton’s town centre.
Over the coming months, Council will be identifying opportunities where we can begin putting parts of the Plan into action. Our aim is to keep the project moving and look for practical ways to support a vibrant and welcoming town centre for everyone.
We would like to thank all community members who took the time to share feedback, attend sessions, or contribute ideas during the development of the Town Centre Plan. Your input has been invaluable.
