East Inlet Access| An update on the temporary closure

Council had closed the access vehicle and pedestrian ramps at East Inlet due to safety concerns.

The closure is temporary while we work out the safest and most appropriate way forward.

Recent erosion has removed material from beneath part of the lower section of the ramp, affecting its support and causing sections of the concrete to fracture. We now need to properly assess the condition of the ramp and the ground beneath it before deciding what happens next.

So, what happens now?

Council is looking at the extent of the damage and the options available.

There may be a short-term option to repair the existing ramp and restore 4WD access sooner.

A more substantial replacement is another option, but this would require further investigation, design and costing. Depending on the cost, it may also need to be considered through a future Council budget process and would involve further discussion with the community.

One of the things we also need to work through is that the existing ramp was privately constructed and is not currently a Council asset. At the same time, we recognise that the community values this access and wants to see it retained.

For now, the ramp needs to remain closed while we do this work.

We know people would like a timeframe. We don't have one just yet, but we'll provide another update no later than Friday 28 August when we hope to have clearer idea of the options and next steps. Thanks for your patience while we work through this one.
