UPDATE: Bass Highway upgrades between Broadmeadows and Christmas Hills

Great news - the Tasmanian Government has confirmed upgrades between Mella Road, Broadmeadows and Fagans Road, Christmas Hills.

The works will include wider road shoulders, road surface repairs and improvements to the Blameys Road, Dixons Road, Tabbys Road and Fagans Road junctions.

Construction is expected to start in early 2027.

The Government has advised that this section was prioritised following discussions with Circular Head Council about the importance of these upgrades.

Council has been advocating for local knowledge and community needs to be considered when priorities are set for the Bass Highway. Earlier this year, we welcomed progress on several sections west of Smithton. Read more about Council's Bass Highway advocacy.

What happens next?

Investigation work between Mella Road and Fagans Road will take place from Monday 24 August to Friday 4 September 2026.

The Government is also looking at possible future upgrades between Dismal Road and Comeback Road, with investigation work planned from Monday 7 September to Friday 18 September 2026.

The investigations will include digging test pits in the road shoulder and road surface to gather information for the upgrades.

Reduced speed limits and a lane closure will be in place while this work is underway.
