Council's waste transfer station is located at White Hills, on the Bass Highway approximately 2 km east of Smithton.

What services are available?

The transfer station uses large bins, which take domestic and other wastes that can be manually handled. Other containers are provided for recycling of glass and some plastics, e-waste, properly rinsed chemical containers, white goods (fridges etc), batteries, tyres, and vegetable and motor oils. Green waste can also be disposed of on site.

Recycling is available at the transfer station. There are no charges for use of this facility.

In partnership with Paintback, White Hills Waste Transfer Station is a permanent drop-off location for you to bring your unwanted paint and packaging – and it’s free to drop off!

Materials that cannot be disposed of include: hazardous materials (such as contaminated soil, etc), liquids, and other "controlled" wastes. Contact Council for advice on disposal of these materials, or with any questions.

Tipping is supervised by the Transfer Station contractor who collects fees upon entry or checks your proof of residency. This allows direct supervision of the dumping and ensures the facility is not abused and inappropriate waste is not dumped.

In cases of after hours emergency such as fire, hazardous waste incident, break-in, property damage (where site security is compromised) the Director Infrastructure and Development Services can be contacted on (03) 6452 4800 for all emergency numbers.
