New community noticeboards for Circular Head

We’re making it easier for people across Circular Head to find useful local information.

Twelve new community noticeboards have been purchased and will be installed across Smithton and our outlying communities over the coming months.

We’re starting in Smithton, with a board planned for outside Woolworths. We also have a suggested list of locations including Forest, Stanley, Marrawah, Irishtown and Rocky Cape – but we haven’t locked in all the locations yet.

We’d love some help with that. If you know a good location for a noticeboard – somewhere accessible that people regularly visit – please let us know.

Why are we doing this?

Through the Circular Head 26Ten Learn for Life and Access to Health projects, people told us they sometimes find it difficult to find information about health and wellbeing, learning opportunities and what’s happening in their community.

We heard similar things during consultation for Council’s new Communications and Engagement Strategy. One of the messages from that consultation was the importance of continuing to provide printed information alongside our online communication, so people aren't left behind. We also know there can be barriers to accessing information online, including internet and computer access, literacy and location.

These noticeboards are one small, practical way we can respond to what we've heard.

What will go on the boards?

The new boards will focus on useful community information, including Council information, community activities, literacy and learning opportunities, and health and wellbeing information.

But we’d like to check back in with you to ensure we’ve got that right too. What information would you find useful on a community noticeboard? Let us know in the comments below or contact the project lead Kate Grey at kgrey@circularhead.tas.gov.auifyou have any other thoughts.

What about the noticeboards already out there?

We know there are already community noticeboards dotted around Circular Head – and we’d like to know where they all are.

These probably work a little differently to the new boards, with notices about local services, things for sale and other community information, but they’re all part of the way information gets shared around our communities.

Our longer-term idea is to create a map of all the community noticeboards across Circular Head – existing and new – so people know where they can go to find local information. If you know of one, please tell us where it is.

A big thank you to everyone involved through Circular Head Council, Circular Head 26Ten Learn for Life and Access to Health for helping make this happen.

We will keep you updated as this project progresses.
