Church Street / Wharf Road Intersection Upgrade
(A part of the Church Street Master Plan)
Council is about to start work on the first stage of the Church Street Master Plan. This plan was shaped by community feedback over the past few years, with residents asking for a safer, more walkable main street. Stage One focuses on addressing the long-standing safety concerns at the Wharf end of Church Street.
Start dates will be provided shortly.
What is this project about?
In 2023, Council adopted the Church Street Master Plan, to guide future improvements to Stanley’s main street.
The plan was shaped by community feedback through surveys, workshops and meetings. You told us you wanted:
- A safer street
- Easier and safer walking access
- Better traffic flow
- A stronger “main street” feel
One of the biggest concerns raised was the confusing and unsafe layout at the Wharf end of Church Street. Traffic assessments confirmed this area needs improvement.
What’s happening now?
We are delivering Stage One of the plan.
This stage focuses on the intersection where Church Street meets Wharf Road.
The current layout creates safety risks for drivers and pedestrians. To fix this, we will:
- Close the Church Street and Wharf Road junction
- Change Church Street to one-way traffic heading north (towards Victoria Street)
- Extend the footpath to make walking safer and easier
Why are we doing this?
These changes will:
- Mean fewer tricky spots for drivers
- Make traffic flow simpler and safer
- Improve pedestrian access
- Deliver the first step in the community’s long-term vision for Church Street
How will this affect the community?
- Works will begin on Monday 25th May and are expected to take 4–6 weeks
- There will be some traffic disruptions during construction
- Signage and traffic management will be in place
