Circular Head Waste Partnership

Circular Head Waste Partnership

Waste affects all of us - what it costs, how it’s managed, and the impact it has on our environment.

The Circular Head Waste Partnership is about taking a more open and practical approach to how we manage waste into the future.

It’s about Council and the community working together - understanding the challenges and finding solutions that work for Circular Head.

Why we’re doing this

Waste services are changing. Costs are increasing, standards are higher, and parts of our current system are reaching the end of their life.

Some of the key challenges include:

  • Rising costs, including the State landfill levy
  • The future closure of the Port Latta landfill
  • Ageing infrastructure
  • Increasing environmental and safety requirements

These aren’t decisions we can avoid - but how we respond to them is something we can work through together.

Our part / Your part

A sustainable waste system relies on both Council and the community.

Council’s part

  • Provide reliable waste services
  • Plan for the future and invest in infrastructure
  • Be clear about costs and challenges
  • Keep the system fair - where people pay for what they use
  • Work with the community on practical solutions

Your part

  • Use the right bin
  • Reduce waste where possible
  • Recycle correctly
  • Stay informed
  • Get involved and have your say

When both parts work together, we get better outcomes - for cost, service, and the environment.

What’s already decided - and what’s not

Some things are already set:

  • The Port Latta landfill will need to close in the future
  • The state government landfill levy will continue to increase
  • Waste services will become more expensive to deliver

But many important decisions are still open, including:

  • How we reduce the amount of waste going to landfill
  • How services may change over time
  • What facilities and infrastructure are needed in the future
  • What works best for our community

What happens next

Over the coming months, we’ll be:

  • Sharing more information about how the waste system works
  • Explaining costs and future challenges
  • Asking for input on specific ideas and options
  • Keeping the community updated along the way

This is an ongoing conversation — not a one-off consultation.

Part of the bigger picture

The Waste Partnership will help guide the development of a new waste strategy for Circular Head.

This strategy will set the direction for how waste is managed into the future - including services, infrastructure and costs.

The Recycle Journey

When we launched the Circular Head Waste Partnership, we started with a survey with one simple question:

What makes it difficult for you to reduce the waste you send to landfill?

One thing the survey highlighted was that almost one in three respondents said they aren't sure the recycling they put in their bin actually gets recycled!

If people aren't confident the system works, it's understandable they may be less motivated to participate. That isn't just a waste issue. It's a trust issue. And trust is something we can start building today.

The truth is that there are parts of the recycling journey that we don't fully understand either. So we're going to find out.

Over the coming months we'll follow the journey of our recycling, ask questions, speak with the organisations involved and share what we learn with our community.

Story 1 - πŸ”ŽWhere does it actually go?

Story 2 - coming soon.
