From September 2025, general waste collection for residential properties in urban areas of Smithton and Stanley will move to a fortnightly schedule, bringing it in line with the existing rural service.
This change will support the rollout of Circular Head Council’s new Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) service, which will provide households with a green-lidded bin for food scraps and garden waste.
The aim is to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and support a more sustainable and cost-effective waste system for the community. While general waste attracts a state landfill levy of $44.88 per tonne, FOGO material is not subject to this levy — meaning the more we divert through FOGO, the more we can manage future waste costs together.
At present, around 10 per cent of Circular Head’s household waste is diverted from landfill. By comparison, other Tasmanian councils with both FOGO and recycling in place are already achieving diversion rates of over 50 per cent.
Affected residents will receive updated collection calendars and more information in the lead-up to the September changes.
