Update on Bass Highway Upgrades
Progress is happening on Bass Highway upgrades between Wynyard and Marrawah, with important safety improvements now moving ahead.
We’ve been waiting on confirmed timelines and have now received these updates from the Tasmanian Government:
- Work on the new Heavy Vehicle Driver Rest Area (HVDRA) at Detention River will begin from 26 May, with completion expected by December 2026. The new rest area at the Detention River Store will provide dedicated truck parking bays for Hellyer-bound traffic and support safer freight movement by helping drivers take mandatory rest breaks and manage fatigue.
Other project updates include:
- Upgrades west of Yanns Road at Rocky Cape are scheduled to start in July 2026.
- Improvements between Hellyer and Edgcumbe Beach are planned to follow.
These projects are important steps toward a safer and more reliable Bass Highway for our community, industry and visitors.
