General Waste (Landfill) Collection
Your general waste bin (green lid) is for items that can’t be recycled or composted.
This waste is collected from your property and taken to landfill.
Landfill is the most expensive part of the waste system, so using this bin correctly really matters.
How the service works
Council provides a kerbside general waste collection service across Circular Head.
- Urban areas (Smithton and Stanley): collected fortnightly
- Rural areas: collected on a fortnightly roster
Your waste is collected by Council and taken to the Port Latta landfill.
Find your collection day using the interactive map: nwrrr.com.au/map
Or download a calendar Smithton North Smithton South Smithton East Stanley
How much does this service cost me?
If your property receives a kerbside collection service, you pay for it through the waste charges in your rates.

What you need to do
A few simple steps help make sure your bin is collected:
- Put your bin out the night before collection
- Make sure the lid can fully close
- Place bins with space between them
- Face the bin towards the road (wheels closest to your property)
- Keep bins clear of cars, trees and poles
What can go in your bin
General waste is for items that can’t go in your recycling or FOGO bins.

What can’t go in your bin
To keep the system working properly, don’t put these items in your general waste bin:
- Recyclable materials (use your yellow lid bin)
- Food and garden waste (use your FOGO bin)
- Hazardous or controlled waste
These items can cause contamination and increase costs.
If your bin isn’t collected
If your bin doesn’t meet collection requirements, it may not be emptied.
A sticker will usually be placed on the bin explaining why.
If your bin was missed and there’s no sticker, leave it out and contact Council on (03) 6452 4800.
Your bin and collection service
- Your bin must have a valid Council bin sticker
- The number of bins collected depends on the services attached to your property (how many services you have paid for)
- Bins should be in good condition (lid and wheels intact)
- Council does not supply general waste bins - these can be purchased locally
For changes to your service or replacement stickers, contact Council.
Why this matters
General waste goes to landfill - the most expensive part of the system.
Every tonne sent to landfill:
- attracts the State landfill levy
- adds to long-term costs
The less we rely on this bin, the more we can manage future costs.
Simple ways to reduce your general waste
- Use your recycling bin for accepted materials
- Put food and garden waste in your FOGO bin
- Avoid unnecessary packaging where possible
Small changes can make a big difference over time.
Clean and dry the front of the wheelie bin. Peel off the backing and stick to the front of the bin. It should be centred towards the top so the truck driver can easily see it.
Contact Council, who will check if bin(s) are rated on the property, then note the property that a replacement sticker has been issued and supply an Authorised Wheelie Bin Sticker.
You will receive a sticker for each bin collection charge paid for at the property.
Bins must be in good working order. Council do not supply wheelie bins for garbage collection or replace damaged garbage bins. You can purchase a new Council rated garbage wheelie bin from local hardware stores.
