Have your say on proposed speed limit changes
Council is asking the community for feedback on possible speed limit changes at four locations across Circular Head.
Before deciding whether you support or oppose a change, we’d like to explain why these locations are being considered and what happens next.
This consultation happens to coincide with Rural Road Safety Month, but road safety is something we take seriously all year round. We live with rural roads every day – sharing them with cars, trucks, farm machinery, school buses, visitors, cyclists and wildlife.
It's worth remembering why these conversations matter. In 2025, 906 people lost their lives on rural Australian roads. Looking out for each other is part of who we are, we all have a role to play in helping everyone get home safely.
Why are these roads being reviewed?
The review did not start with a decision to lower speed limits.
Trowutta Road and Cantara Road were reviewed following community requests, while South Road and Mengha Road/South Road were identified through an independent rural road safety audit.
A qualified consultant then assessed all four locations against Tasmanian and Austroads speed zoning guidelines, considering factors including road use, crash history, road layout, property accesses and existing speeds.
Importantly, Council does not make the final decision on speed limits. Any change must be approved by Tasmania's Transport Commissioner.
Before Council decides whether to support an application to Tasmania's Transport Commissioner, we want to hear from the people who use these roads.
The survey will be open for four weeks with an opportunity to comment on each location.
