West Esplanade, Smithton
Turning a community vision into reality
West Esplanade has long been recognised as one of Smithton's most important recreation spaces.
In 2025, Council worked with the community to develop the West Esplanade Foreshore Park Master Plan, creating a long-term vision for transforming the area into a vibrant destination for families, young people and visitors. The master plan includes ideas such as new playgrounds, a pump track, improved paths, landscaping, better access to the river and upgraded public facilities. The master plan provides an overall direction for the site, with the detailed designs continuing to evolve as the project progresses.
Originally, Council planned to deliver this vision through significant external grant funding.
While Council will continue to seek grant opportunities where they make sense, we've also recognised that waiting for funding alone could mean the community waits many more years before seeing any improvements.
Instead, Council is taking the first steps itself.
Through the Community Recreation Fund, work will begin this financial year on the first stage of improvements. This is expected to include new play equipment, a pump track and new public toilets, with planning and design work continuing alongside construction.
We'll continue working with the community as the project develops, sharing plans and providing updates as each stage progresses.
