Construction has started at the Circular Head Community Wellbeing Centre in Smithton.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the centre would encourage physical activity and support community services, including work injury rehabilitation.

“The project will create about 70 jobs during construction, plus five permanent jobs once it opens,” Mr Chester said.

“When it’s complete, the new Wellbeing Centre will include a six-lane 25 metre pool, a threelane program pool and an aquatic play area,”

“I want to help build better regions, and investing in good quality community centres, like this one, makes a big difference.”

Tasmanian Deputy Premier Jeremy Rockliff said that the new centre will feature a modern foyer and office space, and external courtyard area with seating.

“Today marks a very exciting day for the local community right here in my electorate of Braddon, and this centre will be fantastic for locals to enjoy while also supporting local jobs,” Mr Rockliff said.

“The centre will connect and integrate with the adjoining existing indoor sports stadium, offering a range of health and wellbeing programs to the community.

“It’s a great example of how local, state and federal Governments are working together to enrich the lives of Tasmanians.”

Mayor of Circular Head Council Daryl Quilliam said he was pleased to see all levels of government working to deliver a facility that meets the needs of the community.

“This facility will provide opportunities for current and future generations to be fit, healthy and engaged in the community and in the workforce,” Cr Quilliam said.

“The Community Wellbeing Centre will help us to attract and keep the people we need in our community to work, and grow our local economy.”

This project is being jointly funded by the Federal Coalition Government ($3,822,750), the State Government ($3,500,000), and the Circular Head Council ($4,539,295).

The Circular Head Community Wellbeing Centre is due for completion by March 2019.
