Circular Head Mayor Daryl Quilliam today announced the winners of this year’s Australia Day Awards and two scholarships as part of celebrations at the Twilight on the Duck.

Elizabeth (Lizzy) Gale was named as Citizen of the Year, with Eli Perry awarded Young Citizen of the Year Awards and the Circular Head RSL World War 1 Centenary named as Community Event of the Year.

“Lizzy has been named as this year’s Citizen of the Year because of many years’ passionate service to our community,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“Not only has Lizzy been a prominent business owner in our community for 35 years, she has also been involved in the Circular Head Business Group, the Lighting of the Christmas Tree event, the Smithton RSL revitalisation into the Circular Head RSL, and much more.

“I’m sure you will all agree Lizzy works tirelessly for this community, and will continue to be a valued resident who is always happy to help.”

Mayor Quilliam said this year’s Young Citizen Award recipient Eli Perry demonstrated a great passion and drive for the Circular Head area.

“Eli is heavily involved in the Circular Head Youth Leaders group and his recent nomination for chairperson demonstrates the support and encouragement he offers to other members,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“Eli has also shown a dedication to his work at the Circular Head Chronicle, completing his apprenticeship 18 months earlier than scheduled.

“His support of a number of events such as the Devil Country Muster, Light the Night and more is also further evidence of his willingness to be involved and will no doubt be a future leader of this community.”

Mayor Quilliam congratulated the organisers of the Circular Head RSL World War 1 Centenary, which he said had helped spread the commemorations across the Municipal Area.

“It is thanks to many hours of work undertaken by committee members Rod Wells, Lizzy Gale, Jason Chatwin, Adrian Dodd, Lizzy Gale, Sue Popowski, Sue Smedley, Willy and Jill Gale and Mick Shelly (deceased), that this event was so successful,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“From projects at Stanley, Smithton and Marrawah, the Circular Head RSL undertook the huge task of ensuring each of these locations had something different to help commemorate this important event.

“Their hard work will continue to offer a reminder of this occasion for generations to come.”

Jasmin Quilliam was announced as the 2016 recipient of the Mayor’s Education Fund bursary.

“Jasmin is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Arts at the Cradle Coast Campus of UTAS and will eventually move into a Bachelor of social work,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“Jasmin is a single mother of two and juggles family, work, volunteering and study commitments.”

Jasmin is interested in health and nutrition and is involved in basketball, squash and the surf-lifesaving club. She volunteers at the Burnie gymnastics club and was also involved in a volunteer program with Anglicare.

The recipient of the 2016 Soroptimist International scholarship was announced as Tiffany Brooks.

Tiffany lives in Smithton and has recently completed Year 12 at Hellyer College and will be undertaking a Bachelor of Education (Primary) at the Cradle Coast Campus of UTAS.

Tiffany is excited to be able to continue learning and is looking forward to teaching some of Australia’s young minds.
