Circular Head Mayor Daryl Quilliam said a successful Government and community partnership has led to the successful upgrading of two sporting facilities in Smithton.

Mayor Quilliam was joined by Federal Member for Braddon Brett Whiteley and a representative of the State Government on Saturday (30 May 2015) for the unveiling of upgrades to the Smithton Hockey Complex and Smithton Recreation Ground.

The Federal Government provided $350,000 and $100,000 of funding for the projects respectively, with Council and others providing the remaining funds.

The State Government also contributed $80,000 to the Smithton Recreation Ground project.

"I’d personally like to thank not only the Federal and State governments, but also the Smithton Football Club, the Hine family, Smithton Turf and of course the Circular Head community for their various contributions to these important projects," Mayor Quilliam said.

"Thanks to this approach both the Smithton Hockey Complex and Smithton Recreation Ground will be some of the best facilities in the state."

The upgrades saw the renewal of the existing synthetic hockey pitch, installation of a programmable scoreboard and extension and coverage of seating at the Smithton Hockey Complex.

Meanwhile the funds delivered four new light towers at the Smithton Recreation Ground

"These upgrades will allow top level sporting activities to be held within our municipal area and will see both venues continue to cater for a large number of people," Mayor Quilliam said.

"In the case of the Smithton Recreation Ground, this upgrade will also allow other non-sporting events to occur on site, which will be of great benefit to the community."

Mayor Quilliam took the opportunity to also pass on further thanks to the many hours of volunteers at both facilities.

"Without the many hours put in by volunteers, these facilities would not be at the standard they are today and I thank them for their important contribution to Circular Head," Mayor Quilliam said.
