Circular Head Mayor Daryl Quilliam announced the winners of this year’s Australia Day Awards as part of celebrations at the Twilight on the Duck.

Sue Smedley was named as Citizen of the Year, with Callum Poke and Jesse Jackson both awarded Young Citizen of the Year Awards and the Circular Head Garden Spectacular named as Community Event of the Year.

“Sue has been awarded Circular Head Citizen of the Year thanks to many years of passionate service to the community,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“From the Circular Head Agricultural Show, volunteering her time at the Stanley Discovery Centre, or at the Stanley Primary School and many others, Sue is one never afraid to lend a hand.

“Sue is truly a citizen worth recognising and I congratulate and thank her for all that she does for Circular Head.”

Mayor Quilliam said it was so difficult to separate the great work being done by this year’s Young Citizen Award recipients, it was decided to award them both.

“Both Callum and Jesse are actively involved with Circular Head Youth Leaders and have achieved amazing things in their life so far,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“Callum was not only co-president of the Smithton High School Executive, but has also played a senior role in hockey representing Tasmania on five occasions and has achieved at high level academically, which he hopes will help take him onto an engineering degree at the Australian Maritime College.

“While Jesse has also gone above and beyond after overcoming personal illness to now being involved in a number of organisations including Relay for Life, Meals on Wheels, the Smithton Leo Club and more.”

Lastly Mayor Quilliam congratulated the organisers of the Circular Head Garden Spectacular, which was held at Highfield House in Stanley in October last year.

“The Circular Head Garden Club went above and beyond when the decided to boost its annual flower show with high profile guests, cooking, equipment and stonewall demonstrations as well as hundreds of plants,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“It was estimated that about 5000 people attended the event and truly showcased not only what a great place this is to visitors, but what we can do as a community.

“Well done to everyone involved, an event very worthy of recognition.”
