Circular Head Mayor Daryl Quilliam said works on the Smithton Recreation Ground to install new lighting would commence early next month.

“Council’s Works Plus business unit will be undertaking the work to install the lights commencing on Monday 06 October 2014 in cooperation with Don Joyce Electrical and BridgePro Engineering,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“The total cost of the project is about $265,000 with funding from Council, State and Federal Government and a contribution from the Smithton Football Club.”

Mayor Quilliam said the works were anticipated to be completed by the end of November.

“There will be no disruption to sporting activities during this time,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“The installation of the four 25 metre light poles with 48 lights in total, will enable the main oval to be used for night time football and cricket, which is a fantastic addition to the activities at the ground.

“There is also the added community benefit that the lighting will bring to community events such as Relay for Life and others.”

Mayor Quilliam said while the project was a long time coming it was worth the wait.

“The Smithton Football Club first submitted designs for lighting in 2008 and finally we are in a position to move ahead with this project,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“Thanks must go also to the community members who have been working behind the scenes on this project and I thank them for their efforts, it is another great example of Council working with the community.”

Mayor Quilliam said Council would continue investigating funding opportunities for lighting the bottom (training) oval.
