Following the success of the “Look Out for Your Mates” campaign, the Circular Head Community Road Safety Partnership Committee yesterday launched the Provisional Driver Incentive Project (PDIP).

Circular Head Mayor Daryl Quilliam said the project aimed to build confidence, encourage safe driving and build positive relationships with Tasmania Police and other road users.

“Initially Tasmania Police will be looking to reward licensed provisional drivers with some form of recognition or reward for good driving,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“Hopefully this will reinforce to young drivers that doing the right thing has positive consequences.”

Mayor Quilliam said the project was developed following evidence that highlighted that young drivers are over-represented in serious and fatal road crashes.

“Unfortunately lack of experience and judgement, coupled with risk-taking, sometimes results in tragedy, something which we know too much about in our region,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“This project aims to supplement the positive work already happening in the municipal area to keep road users safe.”

Mayor Quilliam said the reward for good driving was likely to be a gift voucher for fuel or similar.
