Circular Head Council will be installing a tourism sign 1km east of the Stanley turnoff on the Bass Highway to help encourage visitors to travel beyond Stanley.

Circular Head Mayor Daryl Quilliam said the sign, which reads “Edge of the World / The Tarkine / via Smithton” was intended to be a powerful drawcard for attractions beyond the Stanley turnoff.

“While Council recognises that Stanley is a key tourism drawcard, this sign is about encouraging visitors to wander further and experience sites such as the Tarkine, Marrawah, Smithton and other areas of the far North West,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“Council has received support from both the Cradle Coast Authority and Circular Head Tourism Association for the sign, which both agreed would attract additional attention to what was beyond Stanley.”

Stanley-based photographer David Murphy’s image of a scene near the Arthur River mouth was chosen for the sign through a public photographic competition.

“David’s photograph will certainly help the 4.5 x 3 metre sign standout on the highway,” Mayor Quilliam.

“Following negotiations with the Department of State Growth it is pleasing to now see this sign take pride of place and act as an incentive for visitors to the area to explore further.”

The sign will be installed on Friday with the westbound lane of the Bass Highway expected to be partially closed from 8am until about noon.
