Circular Head Mayor Daryl Quilliam has announced the start of works to demolish and redevelop the Smithton Wharf.

Circular Head Council has awarded the Contract for the demolition and redevelopment of the Smithton wharf to Tas Span Pty. Ltd. (Tas Span), which is a civil infrastructure construction company based in Latrobe. The project is expected to be complete end of December.

Tas Span is expected to move onto the site early August, with demolition of the old wharf anticipated to start mid August,” Mayor Quilliam said,

“Stage one, which will be completed in about September will include the demolition of the abalone shell yard and old shed, the set up of construction site fencing, installation of underground power, the refurbishment of the little loading wharf, demolition of the southern section of the wharf and pile driving for new southern section of wharf.”

BACKGROUND

In October 2008 Tasmanian Ports Corporation Pty. Ltd. (Tasports) declared the Smithton wharf to be unsafe and unsound and erected security wire across the land frontage of the wharf, prohibiting public access.  Circular Head Council pursued external funding sources, resulting in a $1,000,000 Grant Deed for planning and works associated with upgrading the wharf infrastructure and surrounds.

KEY ELEMENTS OF THE PROJECT

“This is an exciting project that will result in new community infrastructure on the Smithton waterfront,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“We will keep the community up to date with the progress of works on site, including an anticipated completion date, as project timelines are established by the contractor.”
