Circular Head Mayor Daryl Quilliam today announced that two people had been made recipients of this year’s Mayor’s Education Fund Bursary - Brock Cartledge and Ellie House.

Brock and Ellie will share the Bursary this year, receiving $2500 each towards their studies.

"Brock will be undertaking a three year Bachelor of Environmental Design course, followed by a Master of Architecture, which will enable him to become a fully qualified architect," Mayor Quilliam said.

"Brock said this study is something that he hopes will provide him with strong career path doing something that he loves."

Brock will be studying at the Launceston campus of the University of Tasmania.

The second recipient is Ellie House.

"Ellie is undertaking a Bachelor of Music with a Diploma of Languages at the University of Melbourne," Mayor Quilliam said.

"Upon completion of this three year course Ellie aims to continue her studies by completing a Master of Music Therapy, a further two years in duration."

Ellie enjoys studying music at tertiary level and she looks forward to using her musical talents for therapeutic purposes, having witnessed firsthand the benefits of music therapy for the development of children with special needs.

"Ellie was elected class captain and then Peer Leader at Marist Regional College," Mayor Quilliam said.

"She was also a member of the Academic Committee of the Student representative Council and in 2010 attended a week long Marist Youth Leaders camp in New Zealand."

Mayor Quilliam wished both Brock and Ellie all the best for the future studies.

The Mayor’s Education Fund was established in 2002 to assist a Circular Head resident to engage in further study by helping offset some of their costs.

A $5000 Bursary is awarded each year and applicants are required to demonstrate that they would find it difficult to access further education without the funding support. It is preferable that the course is relevant to the district.

The Mayor's Education Fund Bursary is part of the University of Tasmania's West North- West Bursary Program. The Bursary was awarded to Lisa Ryan last year, who received $5000 towards her education.

Other scholarships presented today included the Soroptimists International of Circular Head Scholarship, which went to Mariah Buckby and the Flora Fenton Scholarship, which was also given to Ms Buckby.

Also recognised today was the inaugural Woolnorth Windfarm UTAS Springboard to Higher Education Bursary.

The program encourages young people in rural and regional Tasmania to continue with their education at the highest level. The bursary is $500 paid at the start of Grade 11, $750 for the start of Grade 12 and $2000 for the first year of study at UTAS, to a total value of $3250.

The Smithton High School recipient was last year announced as Tash Perry and the Circular Head Christian School recipient was Connor Hickey.
