Circular Head Acting General Manager Tony Smart said Council last night approved the development application for the demolition and construction of a new Smithton Wharf.

Following the closure of the wharf in October 2008, Council has pursued funding to take control over the Smithton Wharf and marina area.

This work culminated in a deed between the State Government and Council, with $1 million provided by the State Government towards planning and associated works to upgrade wharf infrastructure and the surrounding area.

“This approval will allow Council to get the work underway to develop the new wharf at Smithton,” Mr Smart said.

“This is creating a lot of interest particularly for professional fisherman and will form part of a wider strategy in development of the Eastern Foreshore.”

Mr Smart said following the transfer of the title in September 2012, Council’s Strategic Projects Office had been working with the Smithton Wharf Redevelopment Reference Group to progress the demolition and redevelopment of the Smithton Wharf.

“This group has not only provided Council with a cooperative approach to design, construction and installation of access in the interim, but has also assisted in the necessary studies and subsequent purchasing of additional land required,” Mr Smart said.

Mr Smart said he would therefore like to again thank the reference group for their work during this process and thanked all users of the existing Smithton Wharf for their patience.

A planning permit application was first lodged mid 2012, but in response to issues identified during the public representation period it was withdrawn to allow further design changes to be undertaken.

The new approved application, which was accompanied by an alternative wharf design, was accepted in February 2013.

“This new design will see an overall improvement to the amenity of the area, which will enhance the functionality, safety and aesthetic appearance of the wharf,” Mr Smart said.

“The development will also introduce landscaping and car parking, encourage greater use of the foreshore area and enable connectivity to surrounding public spaces.”

Mr Smart said the development application included:

Council anticipates calling for tenders for the project in April 2013.
