Circular Head Mayor Daryl Quilliam has called on the community to stand with Council to wipe out vandalism.

Council has been left with a significant damage bill over the past financial year (2012-2013) with about $8000 being spent on vandalism repairs.

“Just last week, Council’s Works Plus team was left frustrated when plants were torn out of ANZAC Park in Smithton for the second time in a week,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“At an estimated cost of about $500 alone for this damage, we need the community to stand with us and not tolerate this kind of activity.”

Mayor Quilliam said it was troubling vandalism continued to effect the community after Council had recently joined forces with the Waratah-Wynyard Council to highlight the true cost to the community.

“Again I would reiterate that any money spent on repairs or replacing vandalised property is money that could be spent elsewhere,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“The costs are mounting, with so much already spent on vandalism this financial year.”

Mayor Quilliam said it was only just over a week ago that Council reported damage to trees at Stanley and any information should be given to Tasmania Police.

“Vandalism unfortunately is a continuing problem for Council and I urge the community to keep an eye out for anyone damaging Council infrastructure,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“At the end of the day vandalism is taking away or limiting access to public assets, which are used by the community.”
