Circular Head Mayor Daryl Quilliam has today condemned protest action at Ta Ann in Smithton.

“Taking direct action by taking over a legal workplace is not only unnecessary, it is also potentially dangerous for all parties involved,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“Ta Ann is legally operating in Tasmania and should be able to undertake its operations without the threat of such acts.”

Mayor Quilliam said he had hoped the recent passing of the Tasmanian Forest Agreement would end such conflict.

“Today’s action unfortunately demonstrates that there are certain extreme elements that are unable to be part of any solution to decades of conflict in the industry,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“With recent reports of Tasmania’s jobless rate climbing to 8.1% it is disappointing that we continue to see action taken against companies such as Ta Ann as well as injunctions against new projects such as Shree Minerals.”
