Circular Head General Manager Greg Winton said Council would be advertising a development application for the development of a new Smithton Wharf this weekend.

“Following the closure of the wharf in October 2008, Council has pursued funding to take control over the Smithton Wharf and marina area,” Mr Winton said.

“This work culminated in a deed between the State Government and Council, with $1 million provided by the State Government towards planning and associated works to upgrade wharf infrastructure and the surrounding area.”

Mr Winton said following the transfer of the title in September last year, Council’s Strategic Projects Office had been working with the Smithton Wharf Redevelopment Reference Group to progress the demolition and redevelopment of the Smithton Wharf.

“This work has included land, geotechnical and hydrological surveys, assessments of natural environmental values, land valuations and subsequent purchasing of additional land required,” Mr Winton said.

“Council has also worked with the reference group on design, construction and installation of a gangway to access the existing wharf in the interim.”

Mr Winton said he would therefore like to thank the reference group for their work during this process and thanked all users of the existing Smithton Wharf for their patience.

“I and no doubt the community therefore look forward to the consideration of this application before Council, acting as the Planning Authority,” Mr Winton said.

Mr Winton said the development application included:

The application will be advertised on Saturday 15 December and will close for public exhibition on Wednesday 9 January. A site layout plan will be available for viewing at Council or below.
