Smithton was today announced as a winner in the 2000 - 5000 population category at the Keep Australia Beautiful Tasmanian Tidy Towns Awards 2011/12.

Circular Head Mayor Daryl Quilliam said he was honoured Smithton had won the award and that it was thanks to a number of community organisations.

"The Circular Head Aboriginal Corporation for example have delivered a wide range of programs from a Men's Shed right through to youth and family-orientated programs that are really taking the community forward," Mayor Quilliam said.

"The Community Recreation Complex is another example of a community-driven project that impressed the judges, because of the community's help in getting the development off the ground."

Mayor Quilliam said other projects such as the beautification on the esplanade, a new playground, walking tracks, removal of tea trees, the work of Landcare, the Smith street upgrade and other similar projects had helped get Smithton the award.

"I would like to thank the community for their involvement in these projects and reaffirm Council's commitment to making this municipality an iconic community valued for its balance between the economy, the environment and lifestyle," Mayor Quilliam said.
