Circular Head General Manager Greg Winton today announced the commencement of works on stage two of the Smithton Skate Park.

"I am pleased to say that we have begun works on stage two of the Smithton Skate Park today, which were initially scheduled to start next week," he said.

"The development will see the construction of a skate bowl and vertical ramp that will help improve users' skills, help get more people to the area and provide a safer environment."

The development has been made possible with the help of young people from the community and the Central Outdoor Management Committee who each raised $5000 towards the project.

An additional $28,550 was provided by Sport and Recreation Tasmania, with Council providing the remaining $60,535 into the development.

"This investment further demonstrates Council's commitment to young people in the community and will ensure the facility is used well into the future," Mr Winton said.

"I would like to thank Circular Head designer Peter Poke for his help in designing the project."

Circular Head Recreation and Community Officer Deb Mainwaring said the project demonstrated a good working relationship with young people in the community.

"Following being contacted by young people in the community, Council has been proactive in ensuring users of the Skate Park have been involved in every step of the process," she said.

"This will mean at the end of the day that we will not only have a top class facility, but also that we are providing something that young people will have ownership of."

It is anticipated the development will take 8-10 weeks to complete. During this time the existing Skate Park facilities will remain open, however, users are asked to not enter the construction site during this time.
