Circular Head Council Mayor Daryl Quilliam today welcomed the announcement by Tasmanian Dairy Products Co Ltd (TDP) to build a milk processing facility at Smithton.

Mayor Quilliam said that it was pleasing, but not surprising, that value adding close to the supply source was being pursued.

"For many years there has been much talk about the advantages of manufacturing locally. I am really pleased that a lot of time and effort undertaken to date can now be publicly announced. The timing is ideal given that this announcement comes on the heels of the decision by Gunns Ltd to close the Smithton Mill site."

Mayor Quilliam noted that while he was very proud of the support that the Council had been prepared to provide in this particular instance, the necessary town planning and building  processes would still need to be considered and permits determined before any facility would be constructed.

"I've always been quietly confident that the comparative advantages of the area would result in more investment in dairy activities. This venture validates my belief that Circular Head will continue to make a strong contribution to the Tasmanian economy." said Mayor Quilliam.
