The Circular Head Council was today announced as the 2011 winner of the Whole-of-Community Involvement award for its balance your life health and wellbeing program.

The award, which was voted by a panel of judges, is further recognition of the Council's balance program.

"The balance program was created as a holistic health and wellbeing initiative to address health issues in the community," Circular Head Mayor Daryl Quilliam said.

"The program was created because Council recognised the importance of helping its residents improve their lifestyles and to get them more involved in more recreational and social opportunities."

Today's win follows a high commendation from the Heart Foundation, which Mayor Quilliam said was testament to what the program was delivering.

"The balance program offers something to people of all ages from a range of backgrounds and helps them develop positive relationships within the community," he said.

"It's all about raising awareness of improving lifestyles and increase physical activity to reduce the effects of obesity and chronic disease.

"Because of the success of the program Council is committed to continuing balance and working with a number of other community organisations to further the program and its goals.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Council staff, community organisations and other partners for delivering the balance program and what it sets out to achieve."

The Balance your life initiative was launched in February 2011 with the flagship program "Lose Kilos for the Community" which introduced the community to the health and wellbeing focus of Council.

Initiatives that have been established: Lose Kilos for the Community - lifestyle modification program, Mini Movers - mini 'boot camps' for preschoolers, Circular Head Healthy Communities Initiative - a federally funded program administered by the Cradle Coast Authority and delivered by individual regional Councils, youth activities and other events.
