Circular Head Council is pleased to announce a new Dairy Effluent Assessment Program. With upwards of 150 dairy farms in the municipality Council would like to continue to assist the industry, this time with a focus on maximising environmental performance.

According to Circular Head Mayor, Cr Daryl Quilliam the dairy industry is to be congratulated on the focus given to good effluent management, through Best Practice Dairy Effluent Management Project and DairySAT (Self Assessment Tool).

"Council would like to assess the effectiveness of these initiatives, and use the assessment program to continue to promote good effluent management practices."

As part of this commitment Council has engaged Mr Ted Kulinski, to assess and review the operation of dairy effluent management systems throughout Circular Head. Mr Kulinski has a long involvement with the dairy industry through milk processor Cadbury and will bring this experience to assisting dairy farmers in meeting their environmental responsibilities.

Mr Kulinski will be touring Circular Head assessing the management of dairy effluent within farms. Dairy farmers are asked to assist in the process where possible. If farmers are unavailable a calling card will be left at the farm, with a follow up contact being made about the performance of the effluent management system.

"It is hoped that this program can assist in protecting water quality from a pollution incident, and reduce the need for Council to be involved in investigation and prosecution" says Mayor Quilliam
