The Circular Head Council welcomes the funding by the Australian Government towards the upgrading of the Bass Highway between Burnie and Smithton announced today.

The Council, together with the Cradle Coast Authority and others have over a considerable period advocated the significance of this link to higher levels of government. It provides the principal conduit to export the wealth generated from this area and carries ever increasing numbers of tourist traffic. Indeed, every man, woman and child living in Circular Head depends on this road.

General Manager Greg Winton said "The federal Liberal candidates and Senator Colbeck are to be commended for the positive response achieved over this issue. There is a vast difference between acknowledging the need to undertake improvements and making firm commitments.

No-one has disputed that improvements are necessary.

No-one has disputed that funding the improvements would be simple.

Until today, no-one in a sitting government was prepared to take the initiative."

The Council will now continue to pursue the funding at a State level.
