Circular Head Council last night formally adopted a decision to permanently close the Circular Head War Memorial Swimming Pool.

Circular Head Mayor Daryl Quilliam said in doing so Council had reiterated the importance of working with schools to identify alternative options for learn to swim programs.

“Council’s decision to close the pool last week was not any easy one, but considering the unacceptable risk to the safety of pool users and staff, we hope the community understands,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“Following community consultation as part of the Open Space, Sport and Recreation Plan, Council will be strongly advocating to both the Federal and State Government to help fund the minimum of design and construction of a 25 metre heated indoor swimming pool.”

Mayor Quilliam said Council staff had already met with representatives of the Education Department to discuss learn to swim programs.

“Council representatives will also be meeting with Surf Life Saving Tasmania regarding whether supervised days at local beaches over summer could be a possibility,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“While Council accepts that the condition of the pool makes it unviable to spend further funds on short term repairs or longer term refurbishment it is essential that we work with the community on both alternatives and the future of a swimming pool in Circular Head.”

At the meeting Council also formally abandoned the 2012/13 Aquatic Centre proposal.

Council will not be proceeding with a household survey on swimming pool options as announced in June 2015 because of the decision, but will ensure the community has ample opportunities to provide feedback on the future of the pool as part of the Open Space, Sport and Recreation Plan 2016-2026.

“This decision will allow the community and Council to revisit everything about a pool, including location and ensure that we can move forward with building a new facility for the community,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“As indicated last week, it is essential that we come together to an agreed position in order for Council to attract any Federal and State Government funding.”

Council will continue its work with the Swimming Pool Reference Group and the Circular Head Recreation Advisory Committee on the issue.

A project status plan will also be created by Council and will include regular updates on the matter.
