Circular Head General Manager Greg Winton said Council had begun works to create a 21 space car park on Nelson Street, Smithton.

"Council made enquiries with McCain to purchase land on Nelson Street in 2011 to construct a car park to help alleviate street parking issues," Mr Winton said.

"This work was approved in the 2012-2013 Annual Plan and Budget Estimates and will see the construction of a 21 site car park, including one disabled car parking space."

Mr Winton said local businesses had raised concerns about limited street parking on Nelson Street, which between Smith and Gibson Streets provides about 50 spaces.

"This will be a good outcome for the CBD and will provide additional parking for the town centre," Mr Winton said.

"The new car park will help address issues with the need for short term car parking on the street, while creating space for longer term parking."

Mr Winton said the works were expected to be completed by the end of July, weather permitting.
