Circular Head Youth and Community Officer Alysha House said today's launch of the 2012 Kilos for the Community program was a success.

"We have already had about 40 people sign up for the program in the lunch time session, and we aim to have at least 100 people signed up by the end of today," Ms House said.

"The best thing about this year's program is that it is not just about weight loss, but more focused on personal goals."

Ms House said Kilos for the Community was born out of Healthy Communities funding, which while initially aimed at a select group of people, became about reaching out to the wider community.

"The idea of Kilos was to act as a motivator for the community as it was done as a group, rather than individually," Ms House said,

"A total of 543kg was officially lost last year, but this was by only just over half of the total 343 participants in the program, so it is estimated based on an average weight loss of 3kg per person over 1000kg would have been lost in the first year of the program."

Ms House said the program was part of Council's balance program, which is focused on encouraging an active, vibrant and inclusive community.
