The Designated Driver Program "Who's DES Tonight?" was launched by Mayor Daryl Quilliam at the Rocky Cape Tavern, Rocky Cape on Tuesday 19 April 2011 at 11am.

The DES program was initially developed as a Community Road Safety Partnerships (CRSP) project in Burnie in 2004. The DES program has expanded to other areas in the state which now includes Circular Head.

The DES program is a joint initiative of the Circular Head Community Road Safety Partnerships Committee and the Circular Head Liquor Accord. Other key partners include:

  • Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources
  • Circular Head Council
  • Tasmanian Hospitality Association
  • Department of Treasury (Liquor and Gaming)

The key objective of the designated driver program is to reduce the level of drink driving by encouraging potential drivers to plan ahead and travel with a driver who has not consumed alcohol.

The responsibility of the nominated DES is:

  • Not drink any alcohol prior to participation
  • Approach bar staff to register
  • Obtain a DES card from bar staff  (entitled to four (4) free soft drinks)
  • Not consume alcohol during their time as DES

Mayor Quilliam said "I am very happy to launch the DES program which reinforces that we are caring for the community. It is twelve (12) months ago that I announced the "Look out for your Mates" challenge and we have seen a reduction in road fatalities in the municipality so the DES program is another initiative to assist with lowering the drink driving offences and keeping the community safe. The DES program also sits under the banner of balance your life - Circular Head...health and well-being in the community program."

As at the 19 April the licensed establishments participating in the DES program are:
