Change Leader Appointed

12 August 2004

THE CIRCULAR HEAD EDUCATION & TRAINING CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE announced today the appointment of Mrs Wendy Schoenmaker as the change leader who will implement and promote the "Learning Leading, Building a Community of Lifelong Learning" project, funded through a $382,000 grant from the Australian Government's Sustainable Regional Program.

Mayor Ross Hine, Chair of the consultative committee said that the project aimed to increase the value of education and training in the Circular Head area by promoting training and education for the whole community.

"Wendy, as change leader, will be on the ground implementing specific projects and programs and building community capacity. She will work closely with Circular Head Council and ensure community participation, consultation and acceptability," Mayor Hine said.

The project is part of a strategy to transform the community into one where lifelong learning is valued. It has come about through the Circular Head Partnership Agreement with the State Government and with assistance from the Cradle Coast Authority.

Project partners - Circular Head state and private school principals, representatives of TAFE, the University of Tasmania, State Department of Education, Department of Economic Development, local industry and the Circular Head Council - believe lifelong learning can create a catalyst for economic growth with potential employment, business and industry benefits as well as increasing community leadership.

The General Manager of Circular Head Council, Greg Winton, welcomed the appointment of Mrs Schoenmaker.

"Mrs Schoenmaker's experience as a local government elected member of nine years, Tasmania Together Leader, tourism representative and grass roots community member and educator and, more recently, as market development consultant in South Africa, stands her in good stead for this challenging role," Mr Winton said.

Mrs Schoenmaker will be based at the Circular Head Council offices and can be contacted on 03 6452 4800, Mob. 042 979 3080
