Circular Head Celebrates Australia Day at the Twilight on the Duck

24 January 2014

Circular Head Mayor Daryl Quilliam today announced the winners of the Australia Day Citizen, Young Citizen and Community Event of the Year awards.

The winners are as follows:

  • Circular Head Australia Day Citizen of the Year 2014 – William “Glen” McLaren
  • Circular Head Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year 2014 – Emma-Kate Busscher
  • Circular Head Australia Day Community Event of the Year 2014 – Tour de Tassie Bike Ride

“William, or Glen, as he is better known, is to be commended for his contribution to junior cricket in the Circular Head community,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“I would like to make special mention of Glen’s passion for junior cricket and the many generous hours he has donated to the cause.

“His enthusiasm and commitment truly knows no bounds.”

Mayor Quilliam said Emma-Kate Busscher has had a lot of involvement with youth activities in the area and was the Circular Head Youth Leaders Deputy Mayor in 2012.

“Despite now studying in Burnie, Emma-Kate has continued to work with and for her fellow young people and has demonstrated a long term commitment to the area,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“Her participation in a number of sports and other activities in Circular Head is a further demonstration of her taking on a leading role in the community.”

Mayor Quilliam said the Tour De Tassie – Riding for Cancer was a well deserved recipient of the Australia Day Community Event of the Year Award 2014.

“Michael Thrower and Graeme Drake went above and beyond last year by raising more than $40,170 for the Dale Walters Foundation,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“The fact that more than 200 people welcomed the riders on their return to Smithton is testament to not only the effort made, but also the awareness raised by their event.

“I, and I’m sure many others, was personally touched by the effort these two put in for this very worthy cause and they are to be congratulated.”

Mayor Quilliam personally thanked the winners and those who took time to nominate.
