Field hockey is extremely popular in Circular Head, having the largest player base of any sport in the municipality.
Smithton has a state-of-the-art Astroturf field, which was upgraded in 2003, catering for local, state and national competitions. The facility is managed by Smithton Turf Incorporated, a volunteer organisation.
Although a predominantly winter sport, with local competition games played from April to September each year, there is also a summer roster with fewer teams. The summer roster is generally run on a non-competitive basis.
Circular Head also has men's and women's hockey teams playing in the north-west regional league against teams from Launceston, Devonport and Burnie.
